Motives and Challenges toward the Establishment of the School

The historical background of Bishoftu Higher Education Secondary School was linked with the history of modern education expansion that was empowered by Emperor Menilik II. Modern education was launched in 1908. The paving of modernization via education was attempted by Menilik but not successful due to the invasion of Italian. After the death of Menelik II, the motives for the expansion of programs in education were preceded by emperor Haile Selassie I, who had established many high schools in Addis Ababa, Harar, Dire Dawa, and others. Emperor Haile Selassie I was so interested in the life of Bishoftu during the 1960s that he built an attractive palace in Bishoftu, whose tower is still in standard management style as it was considered a historical legacy for Bishoftu. One of the daughters of Emperor Haile Silasse I,Princess Tegnagnework Haile Silassie, had a keen interest in supporting the community of Bishoftu, which had a deep interest in having a high school to educate their children in the vicinity.
